Airport tips

Colombo (CMB)
Bandaranaike International Airport is the primary point of entry. It is actually located in Negombo, about an hour north of central Colombo. Due to the high traffic leading into the capital, taking the Airport Expressway via taxi or rideshare apps (like PickMe) is recommended.

Mattala Rajapaksa (HRI)
Located in the deep south near Hambantota. While an international airport, it handles very few commercial flights, but can occasionally be useful if flying directly to the southern surf hubs and finding a rare charter.

Colombo

  • ⏱️ Best for a Few Days β€” Colombo 07 (Cinnamon Gardens). Colombo's leafiest and most elegant neighborhood. Spend a morning at Viharamahadevi Park, visit the Colombo National Museum, and explore the stunning colonial architecture along Ward Place and Bagatalle Road. Excellent independent cafes and restaurants make it a pleasure to slow down between sightseeing. The most comfortable and scenic base in the city.
  • πŸŽ’ Backpackers & Heritage β€” Fort (Colombo 01). The historic and commercial center of Colombo. You'll find colonial-era architecture blending with modern skyscrapers, and a few budget accommodations near the famous Dutch Hospital shopping precinct.
  • πŸ‘” Business & Hotels β€” Colombo 03 (Kollupitiya). Home to many major corporate offices, large international hotel brands (like Shangri-La and Taj), and massive shopping malls directly overlooking the ocean.
  • 🍜 Restaurants β€” Wellawatte (Colombo 06) / Mount Lavinia. Extremely vibrant areas known for excellent South Indian and authentic Sri Lankan cuisine, as well as a lively beach strip popular for sunset dining.
  • 🌳 Family Friendly β€” Galle Face Green. A vast urban park running alongside the coast where families gather every evening to fly kites and enjoy street food.

South East Asia

Weligama & Mirissa

  • ⏱️ Best for a Few Days β€” Weligama. Sri Lanka's best beginner surf beach, with a sweeping bay and consistent waves that make lessons genuinely enjoyable. Even non-surfers love it: the town has excellent food, a relaxed beach-town atmosphere, and it's perfectly placed for day trips to the stilt fishermen at Koggala and the Galle Fort. Two or three days here is exactly the right amount.
  • πŸŽ‰ Nightlife & Whales β€” Mirissa. Just a short tuk-tuk ride from Weligama, Mirissa is famous for its vibrant beachfront parties, slightly more advanced surf reef breaks, and being one of the best places globally for whale watching.
  • πŸ’» Remote Work β€” Midigama. A quieter strip situated between Weligama and Ahangama, highly favored by long-term surfers and remote workers looking to escape the heavier crowds while maintaining access to great specific breaks.

Others

Hiriketiya

🚌 Getting there: Bus or tuk-tuk from Dikwella (~15 min) or from Mirissa (~45 min); no direct train πŸ“… Best time: Nov – Apr β€” south coast dry season; May–Oct it shifts to the east (Arugam Bay)

A spectacular horseshoe-shaped bay that has rapidly grown into a prominent bohemian and digital nomad hotspot. It features thick jungle brushing right up against the sand, excellent yoga shalas, and an incredibly tight-knit international community.

Ella

πŸš‚ Getting there: Scenic train from Colombo (~7 hr) or Kandy (~3 hr) β€” book in advance, one of Asia's great rail journeys πŸ“… Best time: Jan – Apr & Aug – Sep β€” drier windows; Jun–Jul can be very foggy and wet

Located high up in the cool, misty Hill Country. Famous for its breathtaking train ride, the Nine Arch Bridge, sweeping tea plantations, and scenic hikes. Internet is generally slower here, but it's an essential weekend getaway from the coast.

Arugam Bay

🚌 Getting there: Bus from Colombo (~9 hr) or taxi from Colombo/Badulla (~4–5 hr) πŸ“… Best time: May – Sep β€” east coast's dry season and peak surf; avoid Oct–Apr when monsoon hits this side

Located on the east coast, meaning its dry season corresponds with the wet season of the south. Highly laid-back, featuring world-class right-hand point breaks, sandy roads, and a heavily community-driven nomad scene from May to September.

Galle Fort

πŸš‚ Getting there: Express train from Colombo Fort station (~2.5 hr) or bus (~2 hr) along the southern highway πŸ“… Best time: Dec – Apr β€” southwest monsoon is dry here; Jun–Sep sees rain but fewer crowds

A spectacularly preserved Dutch colonial fort city on the southwest coast. It is extremely picturesque, entirely walkable, and filled with boutique hotels, jewelry shops, and upscale cafesβ€”though less geared toward long-term remote workers.
