Airport tips

Panama City (PTY)
Tocumen International Airport is the massive "Hub of the Americas." It connects heavily across the entire continent. The new metro line expansion makes reaching central Panama City much cheaper and faster than dealing with legendary highway traffic.

Albrook (PAC)
The secondary domestic airport located right beside the Panama Canal. You must transfer here if you intend to fly internally to destinations like Bocas del Toro or David (for Boquete).

Panama City

  • πŸ‘” Skyscrapers & Business β€” Punta Pacifica / Costa del Este. Resembles Miami heavily. Sprawling waterfront high-rises, luxury shopping malls, and massive corporate headquarters. Everything is highly modern, but profoundly car-dependent.
  • πŸŽ’ Heritage & Nightlife β€” Casco Viejo. The brilliantly restored colonial heart of the city. Highly walkable, packed with rooftop bars with skyline views, boutique hotels, and great cafes. It is the absolute center of tourism and nightlife, though significantly more expensive.
  • ⏱️ Best for a Few Days β€” El Cangrejo / San Francisco. Panama City's most comfortable and walkable neighborhoods, ideal for short-stay travelers. Great restaurants and local cafes on every corner, easy access to Casco Viejo by taxi, and a relaxed residential feel that makes a good base. Day-trip to the Miraflores Locks to watch ships transit the Canal, then return for dinner on Via Argentina β€” one of the city's best dining streets.

Bocas del Toro (Caribbean Coast)

  • 🌊 Surf & Island Hopping β€” Isla Colon (Bocas Town). An archipelago on the Caribbean side. Bocas Town is famously rustic, built largely over the water on stilts. It features a heavy backpacker party scene (Filthy Friday is notorious) and serves as the hub for catching water taxis to empty surf breaks.
  • πŸ’» Nomad Balance β€” Isla Carenero / Bastimentos. Neighboring islands offering significantly quieter environments than Bocas Town. They have started seeing the growth of dedicated coliving spaces aimed at remote workers seeking a pure blue-water Caribbean lifestyle.

Others

Boquete (ChiriquΓ Highlands)

🚌 Getting there: Bus from David (~1 hr); David is reachable by bus from Panama City (~8 hr) or fly from Tocumen Airport (~1 hr) πŸ“… Best time: Dec – Apr β€” dry and crisp in the highlands; year-round coffee harvest runs Oct–Feb

Located high in the mountains near the Costa Rican border. Famous for its perpetual "spring-like" climate, towering volcanoes, world-class coffee plantations (Geisha coffee), and massive retired North American expat population. Ideal for hiking and escaping the relentless tropical heat of the coast.

San Blas Islands (Guna Yala)

πŸš™ Getting there: 4WD shared taxi from Panama City to the coast (~3–4 hr on rough mountain road), then boat to your island (~30 min) πŸ“… Best time: Dec – Apr β€” dry season with calm Caribbean waters; wet season Jul–Nov can make the sea choppy

An incredibly stunning archipelago of 365 tiny islands governed entirely by the indigenous Guna people. There is zero internet, very basic accommodation (mostly hammocks or simple huts), and pure, completely untouched Caribbean beauty. Strictly a magnificent off-grid holiday, impossible for remote work.

Santa Catalina

🚌 Getting there: Bus from Panama City to Santiago (~3.5 hr), then bus to Santa Catalina (~3 hr); or direct shuttle πŸ“… Best time: Nov – Apr for calm conditions; May–Oct brings serious Pacific swell β€” world-class for experienced surfers

A tiny, very remote fishing village on the Pacific coast that has evolved into a premier destination for serious surfers and scuba divers (serving as the jumping-off point for the incredible Coiba National Park). Infrastructure remains quite basic.
