The essential apps and websites every traveller needs before hitting the road

πŸ’‘ Pro tip: Uber and Grab don't operate in Nepal. Use Pathao or inDrive in Kathmandu, and inDrive specifically for Pokhara β€” it's the only app with good driver coverage there.

Airport tips

Kathmandu (KTM)
Tribhuvan International Airport is the sole major international gateway to the country. It is notoriously chaotic, outdated, and prone to severe delays due to weather conditions. Arriving with immense patience is a hard requirement. The Visa-On-Arrival process involves multiple lines and paper forms, so have exact US Dollars ready.

Pokhara (PKR) / Bhairahawa (BWA)
These are newly built international regional airports, conceptually designed to divert traffic from KTM. However, direct international flights are still highly limited, and they primarily serve domestic hops toward the trekking regions.

Kathmandu

  • πŸŽ’ Backpackers & Gear β€” Thamel. The undisputed, extremely dense epicenter of tourism in Nepal. It is an overwhelming maze of narrow streets packed with fake North Face trekking gear shops, budget hostels, bakeries, and lively expat bars.
  • ⏱️ Best for a Few Days β€” Sanepa / Jhamsikhel (Patan). Cross the Bagmati River into Patan for a quieter, more refined Kathmandu experience. Patan Durbar Square is a UNESCO-listed masterpiece of Newari architecture and far less crowded than the main Kathmandu squares. Excellent cafes and restaurants line the Jhamsikhel strip. A half-day in Patan is essential; staying here puts you right in the middle of it.
  • πŸ‘” Heritage & Culture β€” Patan / Bhaktapur Durbar Squares. While not areas you would typically stay long-term for remote work, these ancient, beautifully preserved medieval city centers are the cultural heartbeat of the Kathmandu Valley.
  • 🍜 Restaurants β€” Boudhanath Stupa. The area enveloping the massive Buddhist stupa is heavily populated by Tibetan refugees. It is the absolute best place in the city to find authentic momos (dumplings), thukpa (noodle soup), and a deeply serene, spiritual atmosphere.

Pokhara

  • 🌊 Lakeside Vibe β€” Phewa Lake (Lakeside). Pokhara is the exact opposite of Kathmanduβ€”it is tranquil, green, and highly organized. "Lakeside" is the main tourist strip, stretching along the water with clear views of the Annapurna range on sunny days.
  • ⏱️ Best for a Few Days β€” North Lakeside / Happy Village. Pokhara's most scenic stretch, where guesthouses sit right on the lake with direct Annapurna views on clear mornings. Book a paragliding flight from Sarangkot, rent a kayak on Phewa Lake, and walk to the World Peace Pagoda for sunset. The peaceful cafes and sunset spots along this strip make it easy to linger longer than planned.
  • πŸŽ’ Adventure Capital β€” Paragliding & Trekking Base. Pokhara serves as the primary launching pad for the Annapurna Circuit and Base Camp treks. Furthermore, it is globally recognized as one of the best and cheapest locations for tandem paragliding.

Others

The Himalayas (Everest & Annapurna Regions)

οΏ½οΏ½ Getting there: Fly to Kathmandu (KTM), then bus or jeep to trekking trailheads β€” Lukla (Everest) requires a short mountain flight πŸ“… Best time: Oct – Nov & Mar – May β€” clear skies, stable trails; monsoon Jun–Sep closes many high routes

The fundamental reason most people visit Nepal. The Everest Base Camp (EBC) and Annapurna Circuit are legendary, multi-week tea-house treks. Remote work is effectively impossible here due to extremely limited power and satellite internet, making it a pure vacation or personal challenge destination.

Chitwan National Park

🚌 Getting there: Bus from Kathmandu to Sauraha (~5 hr) or Pokhara (~4 hr); tourist buses depart daily πŸ“… Best time: Oct – Mar β€” best wildlife viewing; Jun–Sep is monsoon, park partially closes

An incredible contrast to the freezing Himalayas. Located in the hot, humid southern plains facing India. Famous for dense jungle safaris where you have a very high chance of spotting one-horned rhinos, crocodiles, and occasionally, Bengal tigers.

Lumbini

🚌 Getting there: Bus from Kathmandu (~9 hr) or fly to Bhairahawa (BWA) then taxi (~30 min) πŸ“… Best time: Oct – Mar β€” comfortable temperatures; Apr–May is hot, Jun–Sep monsoon

Universally recognized as the exact birthplace of Lord Buddha. It is a massive, highly serene development featuring dozens of beautiful monasteries built by different nations (Thailand, Japan, Germany, etc.). A deeply important pilgrimage site rather than a long-term base.

Bandipur

🚌 Getting there: Bus from Kathmandu to Dumre (~5 hr), then bus or jeep up the hill (~45 min) πŸ“… Best time: Oct – Apr β€” clear mountain views; monsoon Jul–Sep makes the steep roads muddy

A beautifully preserved, hilltop Newari town positioned exactly halfway between Kathmandu and Pokhara. It offers no cars on its main street, incredible traditional architecture, and sweeping valley views. Excellent for a quiet, disconnected weekend away.
