Airport tips

Nadi (NAN)
The primary massive international gateway, located on the western side of the main island (Viti Levu). This is where almost all international tourists arrive. It is situated perfectly for immediately transferring to Port Denarau to catch the fast catamarans out to the island resorts.

Nausori / Suva (SUV)
Located on the eastern side of the main island serving the capital. It handles vastly less international traffic and is mostly used for domestic flights or regional connections to other Pacific nations.

Nadi & Denarau Island (Mainland West)

  • πŸ‘” Logistics & Transit β€” Nadi Town. Generally considered just a transit hub rather than a destination. It is bustling, heavily commercial, deeply influenced by Indo-Fijian culture, and where you will find the mass markets and hardware stores. The beaches here are not the picturesque white sand Fiji is famous for.
  • 🍹 Luxury Resorts & Marinas β€” Port Denarau. A massive, heavily manicured, highly Americanized private resort island located right next to Nadi. It is packed with massive international chains (Hilton, Sheraton), a premium golf course, and serves as the primary marina for luxury yachts and ferries heading to the outer islands. Excellent Wi-Fi, but arguably lacks authentic Fijian culture.

Suva (Mainland East)

  • πŸ’» Government & Expats β€” Suva CBD. The bustling capital city and the absolute political and educational heart of the South Pacific. It is notoriously rainy but features a strong expat community of NGO workers and diplomats, offering the most reliable internet, massive local markets, colonial architecture, and the only real urban nightlife in the country.
  • 🌳 Expat Suburbs β€” Lami / Tamavua. Located just outside the chaotic city center, these are the affluent, leafy, hilltop suburbs where long-term expats and remote workers tend to rent larger houses or apartments for extended stays.

Others

Mamanuca & Yasawa Islands

⛴️ Getting there: Yasawa Flyer ferry from Port Denarau (Nadi) β€” Mamanuca stop ~1 hr, Yasawa far end ~5 hr; or seaplane (~10 min) πŸ“… Best time: May – Oct β€” dry season, calm seas; Nov–Apr is cyclone season and many resorts close

The quintessential postcard-perfect Fiji. A chain of stunning volcanic islands extending off the coast of Nadi. The Mamanucas are closer, heavily developed with both luxury resorts and famous backpacker party islands (like Beachcomber), and boast world-class surf breaks (Cloudbreak). The Yasawas stretch further north, offering a much more rugged, remote, and culturally intact experience.

Coral Coast (Viti Levu)

🚌 Getting there: Bus or taxi along the Queen's Road from Nadi (~1–2 hr depending on your stop) or Suva (~2 hr) πŸ“… Best time: May – Oct β€” dry and sunny; Nov–Apr sees heavy rainfall on the south coast

An 80km stretch of brilliant highway hugging the southern coast of the main island between Nadi and Suva. Heavily defined by massive family-friendly resorts separated by traditional coastal villages. A great option if you want beautiful beaches without paying for the boat transfers to the outer islands.

Taveuni

✈️ Getting there: Fly from Nadi or Suva to Taveuni (TVU) (~1 hr); or take an overnight ferry from Suva (~12 hr) πŸ“… Best time: Jul – Sep β€” best visibility for diving; Taveuni is lush year-round but wettest Jan–Mar

Known globally as the "Garden Island." It is incredibly lush, heavily protected by national parks, and dramatically less visited than the western islands. It is a world-class destination for hardcore scuba divers exploring the Rainbow Reef and nature lovers seeking massive, hidden waterfalls deep in the jungle.

Savusavu (Vanua Levu)

✈️ Getting there: Fly from Nadi to Savusavu (SVU) (~1 hr); or take an overnight ferry from Suva (~10 hr) πŸ“… Best time: May – Oct β€” drier on Vanua Levu's north coast; shoulder months Apr & Nov are great value

A spectacular hidden gem located on the second-largest island. It is known as the "Hidden Paradise of Fiji" and features a massive protected bay popular with global yachties, geothermal hot springs, incredibly luxurious eco-resorts, and a deeply relaxed, extremely authentic local vibe untouched by mass tourism.
